Production: 7,000 cases

Greenhough estate is one of Nelson’s founding vineyards and, today, one of the stand-out producers in this intriguing region. Andrew Greenhough, a former art historian, and his partner, Jenny Wheeler are ex Aucklanders who followed their dream in 1991 to develop a top quality vineyard in Nelson’s lifestyle region. Producing multi-faceted wines that are among the finest in the country, their five hectare vineyard embraces meticulous thinking in every aspect of vineyard management and employs the most sensitive influence on winemaking. A tiny yield philosophy shows in wines of elegance and finesse.

Their Hope vineyard, where the winery is based and which is now transitioning to organic certification and operating under biodynamic principles, is devoted mainly to Pinot Noir, with smaller plots of Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Pinot Noir and Riesling vines are now 30 years old and sited on an ancient alluvial plain. River stones run from surface level to a depth of many metres, and the sub-soil has high clay content. Sauvignon Blanc grapes and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewürtztraminer come from three vineyards leased and managed by Greenhough. In certain years a Pinot Blanc is produced from the Home vineyard and, for the second time in 2010 a Rosé made from Pinot Noir is being made (tiny volumes).

Two price levels of wines are produced – the Nelson range and the premium-priced Hope range from the home vineyard. The Nelson Sauvignon Blanc is richly scented, weighty and zingy and consistently seen as one of the top challengers to the best Marlborough offerings. The Nelson Riesling is tangy and ravishingly scented, and the low alcohol Apple Valley Riesling is a delicious mix of exotic citrus with a zesty edge. The Hope Riesling has a luscious sweetness balanced with lively acidity. The Nelson Gewürtztraminer is typically rich, oily and luscious with a thread of citrus, while the Nelson Chardonnay is an upfront style designed to suit those favouring richness in a more fruit forward offering. The Hope Vineyard Chardonnay is powerful and creamy, with intense, ripe grapefruit flavours seasoned with oak, a style designed to age and match food. From younger vines, the Nelson Pinot Noir is rich, savoury, vibrantly fruity and smooth. The flagship Hope Pinot Noir is consistently in New Zealand’s top line-up of Pinot Noirs. A Rosé is produced in tiny volumes each year, made from 100% Pinot Noir in an off-dry style.
